نداء للفنانيين ومنظمي المعارض لمشاريع عام ٢٠١٢

تعلن آرت اللوا عن فتح الباب للمشاريع التي ستتم عام ٢٠١٢‪ ‬ في دكان آرت اللوا.

الدكان هو مكان نظيف مطلي بالأبيض تبلغ مساحته ‪٣‬متر في ٣متر بحائط رابع يفتح على الشارع، ونقدم إمكانيات استخدام تلك المساحة في المشاريع التي تتفاعل مع الجمهور بحيث يمكن للمارة أن يروا المساحة ويتفاعلوا مع العارض مباشرة.

تقع مساحة آرت اللوا في منطقة أرض اللواء السكنية الشعبية في شمال غرب الجيزة. وهي تقع بين منطقتين عشوائيتين هما بولاق الدكرور وإمبابة. أرض اللواء تفرعات من الطرق المتربة المزدحمة التي تأوي مباني خرسانية رمادية. تم إنشاء مساحة آرت اللوا للفنون كوسيط للتبادل المستمر بين أهالي أرض اللواء والفن .‪ ‬

تبحث آرت اللوا عن طلبات مشاريع تشجع التفاعل مع أهالي أرض اللواء. سيتاح للفنانين استخدام مساحة الدكان لمدة شهر كحد اقصى. يمكن استخدام هذه المساحة كاستوديو مما يكشف عملك للعامة أو يمكن أن تستخدم المساحة للبحث فيما يخص المشروع الجاري عمله، كما يمكنك أن تستخدم المساحة لعمل تركيبي تفاعلي أو ربما لفكرة جديدة لم نفكر بها.

سيتم منح أولوية للمشاريع التي تتضمن تعاونا بين الفنان والجمهور و/أو تعاون بين أكثر من فنان. ستوفر آرت اللوا الدعاية. بالنسبة للفنانين غير المقيمين في القاهرة قد توفر لهم آرت اللوا إقامة في السكن المعد لهذا الغرض طوال مدة المشروع.

2012 Call for Artists & Curators for Projects at Artellewa

Artellewa announces an open call for projects to be completed in 2012 in the Artellewa Shop. The Shop is a clean, white, 3m x 3m space with a fourth wall that opens to the street. We recognize the potential for the space to be used for projects that interact with the public, as passersby can see and participate directly with the space.

Artellewa Art Space is located in Ard El Lewa, an informal residential neighborhood in the northwest of Giza. Situated between the two great squatter settlements of Cairo, Boulak El-Dakrour and Imbaba, Ard El Lewa is a labyrinth of crowded dirt roads housing grey concrete buildings. Artellewa Art Space was established as a vehicle for constant interrelation between the people of Ard El Lewa and art.

Artellewa seeks proposals for projects that encourage interaction with the people of Ard El Lewa. Artists will be granted open access to the Shop space for a period of one month. You could use the space as a studio, exposing your process to the public; you could use the space for research for a project-in-progress; you could use the space for an interactive installation; or, propose us a new idea we haven’t thought of.

Projects that involve collaboration between artists and the public, and/or between two or more artists, will be given priority. Artellewa will provide publicity and some financial support for the project. For artists who are not residents in Cairo, Artellewa may offer housing in the resident’s apartment for the duration of the project.

The following facilities and equipment are available for artists:
Shop space + Internet access + Darkroom + Projector + Basic art materials

Proposals are accepted in English or Arabic. Please send the following items in one email to artellewa@gmail.com with the subject heading: Project Proposal_YourName by 11 December 2011.

1. A one-page proposal indicating how you will use the Shop for your project and what audience you hope to involve.

2. A brief budget for the project.

3. A CV for each artist involved in the project.

4. Five images of previous work, labeled 1_YourName, 2_YourName, etc. For videos, please send links.

5. An inventory of images, with explanations if necessary.

	معرضين افتتاح: ١ نوفمبر من ٧،٣٠ مسا ء الي ١٠،٣٠ ١ نوفمبر - ١٥ نوفمبر يوميا من ٥ الي ١٠ مساء ماعدا يوم السبت Two Exhibitions Opening: 1 November, 7:30 - 10:30pm 1 November - 15 November Open daily from 5pm - 10pm except Saturday "مدينة متقاطعة" عمل فيديو فني لـ " شنتال روماني " يتتبع هذا الفيديو الأنطباعات المختلفة لأحدى عشر منطقة نائية في القاهرة. ويظهر الفيديو لمحات من داخل المباني والشقق ومن الشوارع والساحات ايضا. هي تمشية عبر المستوطنات الجديدة والمناطق السكنية ذات الأسوار والأحياء العشوائية والأحياء القديمة التي تعود الى العهد الإشتراكي مما يجعل الطبقات المتعددة لهذا المجتمع وتجلياتها اكثر وضوحا. في الرؤية الأولى ندخل الى المنازل الخاصة ونركز على تفاصيل بعينها في شكل لقطات مقربة. الرؤية الثانية هي تمشية عبر الشوارع تسجل السيارات والأشخاص والمطاعم من منظور من مستوي الخصر مصور بواسطة كاميرا محمولة باليد. الرؤية الأخيرة تشير الى واجهات المباني متتبعة بناء الطبقات المختلفة وتصاميمها. قنوات الفيديو الثلاثة مظبوطة على درجة لونية معينة وغير واضحة قليلا. نحن لا نعلم اين نحن بالتحديد، ما هو الحي الذي دخلناه، اي شقة او مناخ اجتماعي وحتى عندما نظن اننا في مكان مألوف فإننا نبقى غير واثقين بشكل كامل. فيديو: شانتال روماني موسيقى: ألين باجنستوس، نيو يورك 2010 يقام هذا المعرض بدعم من بروهلفتسيا، المؤسسة الثقافية السويسرية. شنتال روماني تعيش وتعمل و تدرّس في زيوريخ وقد عرضت أعمالها في أماكن متفرقة من أوروبا والمكسيك وتشيلي ومصر. وعملت في مصر عام 2010 ضمن مشروع إقامة الفنانين بدعم من بروهلفتسيا. “Transverse City” Video art by Chantal Romani This video traces different impressions from eleven peripherally located boroughs of Cairo. The video shows traces from inside buildings and apartments as well from streets, places and yards. It is a walk through new built settlements, gated communities, informal areas and older quarters dating back to the Socialist Period, making the multi-layered society and their different forms of representation visible. The first view enters the interior of private homes, focusing on specific details in close-up images. The second view tracks the walk through the streets, documenting cars, people and restaurants from a waist-high perspective, shot with a moving handheld camera. The last view points on the facades of the buildings, following the structure of the different levels and their design. All 3 video channels are keyed in specific colors and slightly blurred. We never know where we are exactly, what area we have entered, which flat and which social environment; even when we think we are somewhere familiar, we remain uncertain. Chantal Romani lives, works, and teaches art in Zurich, Switzerland. She has screened and exhibited her work throughout Europe, as well as in Mexico, Chile, and Egypt. In 2010, she was an artist-in-residence in Cairo with Pro Helvetia. The drivers were asked to head towards a location of their own sentimental choice. During the time that they are driving, they tell us the story about their relation with the place. The emotionally charged places are all over Cairo: a grave in City of the Dead, a Casino in Manial, the mausoleum of al Hussein Mosque, a bar in Bulaq, and a garden situated in a informal area called Abu al Numros. The five videos will be simultaneously installed in the Shop at Artellewa, and in several working taxis in Cairo. This exhibition is made possible with support from The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Margot Zanni (born 1971) studied Video in Lucerne and at the School of Art and Design in Lucerne, and resides and works in Zurich. Her work is about the intersection between real and virtual stories and places, focused on the permeable relation between mass media and individual experience. By taking little fragments from daily life, which refer to collective pictures and stories, the known and unknown meet. As media becomes more and more globalized, Zanni focuses on its interpretation from the perspective of different cultural backgrounds and biographies. كائنات معدنية تحلق بلا أجنحة

بدت قاعة العرض الصغيرة أشبه بفضاء فسيح تحلّق فيه كائنات معدنية شديدة الغرابة. كائنات بلا أجنحة، تتسلق الهواء وتحارب الجاذبية بمهارة. لم تفلح الجدران الملساء، المطلية باللون الأبيض، في إعاقة صعودها وتسلقها. ولم تستطع ملامح وجه قاتم متجهم كبح جماحها. هذا الوجه الذي يراقب المشهد في صمت، محاولاً فرض سيطرته، لكن بلا جدوى، فالكائنات المعدنية مازالت تحلق في فضاء القاعة في تحدٍٍّ لإرادته.

يُداعب المشهد حلماً قديماً لدى البشر بالتغلب على الجاذبية الأرضية. غير أن تلك الجاذبية ليست وحدها التي تأسر البشر وتعيق تطلعاتهم، فثمة أشياء أخرى تقوم بالدور ذاته. خليط من الأوهام والأفكار المشوهة تأسرنا وتحد من تطلعاتنا وأحلامنا. أو هكذا بدت فكرة العرض كما يراها الفنان المصري علاء عبد الحميد في معرضه المقام حالياً في قاعة «آرت اللوا» في القاهرة ويستمر حتى نهاية الشهر الجاري تحت عنوان «الحل هو الحل».

ويستغل عبدالحميد إمكانات القاعة الضيقة لخلق تشكيل في الفراغ باستخدام مجموعة من الأشكال المجسمة المصنوعة من قطع الخردة وخامة الحديد، معتمداً على فكرة التحليق كنقطة ارتكاز لتقديم مفهومه الخاص عن التحرر من الأفكار المقيدة للبشر، كما تعد مقاومة الجاذبية إحدى الأفكار الملهمة لأعماله.

ويعكس عبدالحميد في أعماله، محاولات الإنسان للهروب من إيقاع العصر الحديث الذي وجد نفسه متورطاً فيه بكل أشكاله، بدءاً من اعتماده المتزايد على بطاقات الائتمان، إلى نظم التقسيط، وطوابير السيارات في انتظار حركة السير البطيئة، حتى باتت فكرة التحرر هذه، مع الوقت، حلماً بعيد المنال. أما عنوان المعرض «الحل هو الحل» فهو جملة يحاول عبد الحميد من خلالها إعادة صوغ أو إيجاد بديل لشعار «الإسلام هو الحل»، موضحاً أن أي مشكلة يكمن حلها، ببساطة، في الحل الخاص بها كمشكلة ذات حيثيات معينة، وليس في أي شيء آخر!

يقول عبد الحميد: «في هذه التجربة أركز على محاولات الإنسان الخروج من سيطرة أي قوة تقيد حريته الفكرية وانطلاقة عقله. فإذا كان التحليق هو حلم الإنسان بالتحرر من أسر الجاذبية، فالتحليق هنا هو رفض لأي تفكير متطرف يذهب بنا بعيداً من جوهر الدين، ورفض كل التطرف».

ويضيف الفنان الشاب: «فكرة العرض هي رد فعل لما ظهر على السطح، خلال الفترة الماضية، من تبنّي بعض القوى والجماعات الدينية آراء بعينها، تحاول فرضها على الناس وتدفعهم إليها دفعاً باسم الدين. وما حدث خلال الاستفتاء الأخير على الدستور المصري هو نموذج فج لهذه الأساليب التي يستخدمها البعض لفرض الهيمنة والوصاية على عقول الناس. ورمزت إلى هؤلاء بهذا الوجه القاتم المتجهم المرسوم على أحد جوانب القاعة».

وعلاء عبدالحميد من مواليد1981، نحّات وكاتب، يعيش ويعمل في القاهرة، تخرّج في قسم النحت في كلية الفنون الجميلة العام 2008، وله العديد من المشاركات الفنية والنشاطات الثقافية المختلفة، من أهمها معرض «واقعية سحرية» (2010). حصل على العديد من الجوائز، منها الجائزة الأولى في سيمبوزيوم النحت في جامعة أسيوط (جنوب مصر)، وله تحت الطبع رواية عنوانها «فرد آمن». ويعتمد عبدالحميد في أعماله التشكيلية على خامة الحديد وقطع الخردة المهملة، وهو الأسلوب الذي استهواه أخيراً لما ينطوي عليه من متعة الاكتشاف، على حدّ قوله.

Please join us in remembering the life and work of Juliano Mer Khamis on Thursday, April 14 at 8:00pm. Artellewa will screen his documentary Arna's Children on the rooftop at 19 Mohamed Ali Al Eseary St, Ard El Lewa. Juliano Mer Khamis, actor, teacher, and activist, was murdered in the Jenin Refugee Camp on Monday, April 4. He worked with The Freedom Theatre, a space that offers workshops, training in filmmaking, and an actor's school to young people in Jenin. It is not known who was responsible for his death.

"In 2003, Juliano collaborated with Daniel Daniel to produce and
direct the documentary Arna’s Children. The film lovingly documented the work of The Freedom Theater, and the lives of the children from Jenin who participated in the plays and theater workshops. The film is also a document of the horrific destruction visited upon the Jenin Refugee Camp when it was invaded by Israeli forces in April 2002, and an account of the Battle of Jenin fought against this invasion. Following the lives and deaths of the young people who participated in The Freedom Theater, as well as the destruction of the theater itself in the Israeli invasion, the film was regarded by many as a masterpiece, and was awarded the Best Documentary Feature prize at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. في الأيام الماضية وبعد الحادث الأليم بالأسكندرية والذي اثار الكثير من التسائلات بعد اثارة الألم وذرف الدموع كما اثار روح النفور ضد التفرقة او المساس بوحدة الأمة المصرية، سارع الكثير باستخدام الشعار الجامع لرمزي الدين الإسلامي والمسيحي ، الهلال والصليب للتأكيد علي الوحدة الوطنية، واللذي استخدم من قبل اثناء ثورة ١٩، ولكني آثرت استخدام اللون الأسود فقط للإعلان عن الحداد، فقد شاب صدري شئ ما ضد هذا الشعار، فأنا كمسلم لا استخدم الهلال كرمز لديني، ولكن هذا الشعار الذي بات يتكرر امام عيني مستفذاً ذاكرتي البصرية الي ان وجدته قريب الصلة بصرياً بشعار الثورة البلشوفية، والتي قامت ١٩١٧ اي قبل ثورة ١٩١٩ بعامين، ليس فقط بصريا ولكنه يجمع رمزين لعنصري الوطن دينياً كما الآخر المنجل والشاكوش يجمع رمزين لعنصري الطبقة الكادحة من عمال وفلاحين، وقد ترك هذا التشابه تسائلاً وددت عرضه عليكم لعلي اهتدي او اساعد احدكم الي الوصل لتحليل ما.

يقام معرض "الواحد و المتعدد" بالتزامن مع بينالي القاهرة, و يعد نتيجة لتبادل اقامات الفنانين مابين مؤسسات فنية في اسبانيا و مصر خلال عامي 2008 و 2009. نظم هذا المعرض للمرة الأولي في قاعات لاكابيلا ببرشلونة الإسبانية مابين مايو و يونيو 2010 , و المعرض يفكك التصورات الثقافية و الفنية, ليبرز وحدة المتوسط و التنوع الفردي لفنانيه الغير قابل للاختزال. من خلال استخدم الفوتوغرافيا و الفيديو بالاساس- بالرغم من وجود استخدام كذلك للخرائط, و التجهيزات التفاعلية و التطريز- فإن الفنانين يقومون بتقصي الواقع المعقد للمجتمعات المعاصرة من اجل استصلاح دور الفن كأداة
و حيز لخرائطيات متعددة.

يقام هذا المعرض في حي أرض اللواء, و يعد تطوراً طبيعيا للعمل الفني الذي بدأ قبل أربع سنوات من خلال آرت اللوا , حيث استضافت فنانين من أوروبا و من الاقليم و قامت بعرض مجموعة متنوعة من الفن المعاصر في قاعة العرض بها. و من أجل هذا المعرض تتعاون ارت اللوا مع مؤسسة النشوقاتي, و التي تعد مشروعاً بدأ في الآونة الأخيرة لتعليم الفن المعاصرعلى مقربة مكانية من أرت اللوا.

Dreams and realities: Burcu Bilgiç's 'Daydreamers'

I want to be an astronaut, an artist, a marine biologist, the president. I want to travel around to see new places, meet interesting people and experience different cultures. Those might have been some of the answers Turkish artist Burcu Bilgiç expected when she asked a group of residents of Ard al-Lewa about their dreams. But the responses she got were very different.

Bilgiç, who has a background in philosophy and film making, is based in Brussels, Belgium. Interested in learning about Egyptian culture, she began a two-month residency program at the Artellewa art center last August. Artellewa is an artist-run gallery that opened in 2007 in the heart of the Ard al-Lewa, an underprivileged informal settlement on the outskirts of Cairo with limited social and cultural services. Like many international artist residency programs around the Middle East, Artellewa seeks to promote intercultural dialogue and develop the local community's interest in art by engaging it with artists in temporary residence.

In a poem titled "Daydreaming in Ard al-Lewa” Bilgiç expresses her distress with the local living conditions and the desire to escape the harsh reality through daydreaming. This idea of daydreamers taking refuge in different worlds of their own construction has long interested the artist. She began asking people in Ard al-Lewa about their aspirations and dreams for a video piece she produced by the end of her residency called "Daydreamers," which she is currently exhibiting at Artellewa.

Accompanied by a local interpreter, the artist set up interviews with children, youth and elderly residents from Ard al-Lewa, expecting to hear about their daydreams. But the responses were disappointing. Some people said they simply had no future dreams, while other aspirations were confined to marriage and starting a family. These answers could be partially attributed to the language barrier, which prevented Bilgiç from directly conversing with interviewees and persuading them to talk more openly. Other factors might be related to different cultural values and local conditions. Family life, for instance, is highly valued in Egyptian culture.

“Few interviews were fruitful. People were very resistant to talking about their aspirations and even prevented me from filming around the neighborhood. The only time I was able to film was at dawn. Naturally, everything was closed and the streets were totally empty,” explained Bilgiç.

Faced with these challenges, Bilgiç redesigned her project from one that presents a community’s dreams as a window into its people’s lives to one about her personal experience in Ard al-Lewa.

The looped "Daydreamers" video installation comprised two main segments. In the first part, Bilgiç presented excerpts from her interviews with residents. Their voices, however, are purposefully muffled to reflect the difficulty the artist had communicating with the Arabic-speakers. This was highly alienating to the exhibition audience.

The second segment displays run-down stores and workshops as well as locked gates to residential buildings around the neighborhood. The artist contrasts the empty streets she filmed at dawn with a sound piece she developed from the honks of cars and tok-toks--narrow motorized vehicles common in informal settlements in Egypt--as well as the shouting of street vendors often heard in Ard al-Lewa.

The locked doors and gates resonate with the artist’s experience. Sympathetic as she was, Bilgiç was not highly successful in developing an intimate relationship with the residents and engaging them with her practice. Residents seemed trapped in a local context that prevented them from daydreaming, at least in the manner Bilgiç had expected. Through "Daydreamers," Bilgiç hopes to encourage the residents to reflect on their living environment and dreams and perhaps re-evaluate some local problems such as sound pollution.

As a representation of local living conditions, "Daydreamers" is quite simplistic and tends to flatten the local context. The broken streets and buildings might not be so striking to fellow Cairenes, so showing them in the video will not necessarily inspire reflection on the neighborhood. And issues Bilgiç chose to focus on, like sound pollution, might not be a highly pressing one for residents. But such problems arise in many art projects with a social dimension.

Socially engaged art becomes more problematic in the context of artist residency programs as many artists experience their host communities for the first time and for a very short period. Some art projects are met with resistance, as reflected in the residents preventing Bilgiç from filming around Ard al-Lewa. Some skeptics of residency programs have condemned them to the extent of calling them artist tourism. Some issues might be solved with a longer residency or recurring visits. Asked if she preferred to stay longer at Artellewa, Bilgiç replied that she needed some time away from the neighborhood to reflect on her experience before coming back to fully engage with the area.

A labyrinth of narrow, crowded streets, with sometimes rudimentary houses and shops crammed next to one another, Ard Al-Lewa, an underprivileged area of Cairo, lacks much in terms of providing a decent living for its inhabitants, the possibility of a good education and even basic sanitation. Yet, Ard Al-Lewa is the setting for "Art Al-Lewa", a pioneering project that aims to show what art can do.

Ard Al-Lewa, an informal residential neighbourhood, is located between Imbaba and Boulaq Al-Dakrour in Giza, its name meaning "the General's Land" in Arabic. Here, Art Al-Lewa, an independent, non-profit project that started in 2007 and is the brainchild of Egyptian artist Hamdy Reda, is encouraging local residents to become interested in the arts with the support of other Egyptian and European artists.

Reda, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo and an artist with a long list of awards and solo and group exhibitions behind him, became interested in the relationship between people and their environment following a scholarship spent in Switzerland. With very few funds, but with the help of many friends, including artists, journalists and academics, Reda established an art centre, Art Al-Lewa in Ard Al-Lewa with the intention of running workshops, exhibitions, lectures, concerts and film screenings for local inhabitants.

Situated in a modest building in the district, the centre's ground floor is used as an exhibition space for works by artists associated with the project, while its rooftop is used for associated programming activities.

Reda was lucky in that he had a wide circle of friends, including many international artists, who were enthusiastic about becoming part of the project. Today, many local and foreign artists are invited to the centre, residing there for months at a time in order to produce works that can then be exhibited in the Art Al-Lewa centre.

The Artists in Residence programme has been a success for Egyptian and foreign artists alike. According to Reda, it has "helped to facilitate cultural exchange and it has expanded the horizons both of hosts and visitors, with both parties realising that there was very much more to be found behind stereotypical images of either 'visitors' or 'locals'."

"The project is all about encouraging creative dialogue," he says.

Now active throughout the year, Art Al-Lewa uses the creative energies of the district's young people, some of whom were sceptical about the project at the beginning. However, now that the project has established itself in the area, many younger residents have realised that Art Al-Lewa can help them to express themselves and realise their potential.

"When the project proved that it was able to bring about positive interaction between people of different backgrounds and cultures, the residents of the district were further encouraged to participate with new ideas," Reda comments. One case in point is Hani Saleh, an Ard Al-Lewa resident with an interest in cinema, who was able to create and manage the centre's film programme.

Thanks to Reda's determination and its staff's diligence, Art Al-Lewa has survived the hurdles that have had to be negotiated during the years of its existence, prime among them the almost permanent shortage of funds. Worries about funding have not caused the project's managers to lose their faith in the community arts model that it represents, however, with every activity offered by Art Al-Lewa being free of charge.

Art Al-Lewa organises workshops led by Egyptian and foreign artists to teach young people photography, filmmaking, video animation and painting. During the summer, an open atelier offers amateur artists the possibility of seeing their works on show. Music is also on the centre's agenda, with concerts held at exhibition openings and musicians invited to perform in the streets of the neighbourhood.

Since its founding, Art Al-Lewa has held some 30 exhibitions of different forms of art. Two are currently on show, running until 20 July. The first, "Stop", features works by Saudi-born Jordanian artist Raed Ibrahim. A beneficiary of Art Al-Lewa's Artists in Residence programme, Ibrahim is exhibiting his work in the district's streets, showing how street signs can be occasions for art.

Ibrahim's work takes conventional traffic signs and rewrites them to produce messages bearing on social and political life, with the messages of ordinary road signs being replaced by new ones, such as "Road to Heaven", "No Beating", "No Police Vehicles" and "Beware of Children Attempting to Fly".

The second of the current exhibitions at the centre is of works by Spanish artist Arnau Llobet Gelabert. This exhibition, entitled "Passport", is also the result of a period of residence at Art Al-Lewa, during which Gelabert spoke to neighbourhood young people of their dreams of seeking a better life abroad.

Gelabert strongly believes in people's right to the freedom of movement, and he cites the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The logo he has chosen for his exhibition captures something of that vaunted freedom in the image of a kite.

The crowded and dirty streets of Ard el-Lewa’, the pullulating residential district in northwest Giza, are partially illuminated by the small Artellewa art gallery, which is currently hosting Arnau Llobet Gelabert’s installation, “Passport,” and Raed Ibrahim’s exhibition, “Stop.”

A wooden cage in the center of a small room surrounded by paper airplanes expresses the "tangible" utopia that the young, Spanish Arnau perceived during his short but intense stay in Cairo, where he first arrived in April. His “Passport” installation is the expression of the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which he also quotes in the exhibition brochure: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

In a cage, a bunch of passports with a cutting saw in between them symbolize those who live their lives as if they were imprisoned, Arnau explains. “People’s life is controlled by the government, which prevents them from traveling abroad by making the release of passports difficult," the artist explains. "Besides, living in a place where you can see airplanes all the time--as in the room surrounded by a blue sky and paper airplanes--is even more frustrating, because it makes you desire freedom even more.”

Arnau is a self-taught visual artist and painter. Humans represent his biggest interest, and, he says, he is in an “endless process of learning, working and investigating shapes, forms and meaning.”

Entering Arnau’s world is revealing: “I know the earth is round, but I like to think it is infinitely flat,” he says. Before explaining his art, he asks your opinion; what you get from the particular work of art.

He likes listening to people, especially women, whose suffering is the main theme of the exhibition. The three paintings displayed in the art gallery were painted in Cairo after speaking and meeting women in the streets of Ard el-Lewa.

In one piece, a woman is suffocated and immobilized by hands that cover her entire body. “Women are often controlled by men,” he explains. “When you are outside, you are someone, but only when you come back home can you be yourself,” he adds, noting that this was both tiring and frustrating.

Arnau loves Cairo, but at the same time expresses concern with social issues and perceived oppression. Living here is often painful for him, and he expresses this suffering in the image of a man whose eyes have been plucked out by a bird, a symbol of those who are consumed--little by little--by others.

Saudi-born visual artist Raed Ibrahim, meanwhile, who currently works in Beirut and Amman, exhibits the “Stop" installation.

A series of original traffic signs suspended outside the art gallery re-establishes the social and civic order--often lacking in the chaos of Cairo, the city that never sleeps--by alerting the viewer to the dangers of people thinking and questioning. The signs serve different functions: one forbids police from entering a particular street; another urges people to pick the direction they want.

“Stop” allows one to choose by establishing order, giving one the right to think and decide in a world that makes sense--as opposed to the chaos that suffocate people’s freedom instead of giving them the privilege to do what they want.

Artellewa is a place in which reality and utopia merge. Children meander through the gallery, curiously observing the exhibition and interacting with visitors. Multicolor tuk-tuks (a three-wheeled motorized cart frequently used in low-income areas of Egypt) stop outside the entrance of the gallery--which was originally a parking garage--attracted by the eclectic group of patrons. Again, art and real life merge; stimulate one another.

It is this kind of innovation and originality that make Artellewa unique. As Egyptian visual artist and gallery owner Hamdy Reda says, one of his aims was to create an interactive place in which young people could become acquainted with art from an early age, through workshops organized each Thursday, or through rooftop film screenings. (The gallery is currently showing films by Fellini at 8.30 PM on Thursdays.)

Nothing conveys the blend of lives and experiences that pass through Artellewa better than the gallery’s motto: “There are no foreigners in art.”

The “Stop” and “Passport” exhibits launched on 29 June and will end on 20 July 2010. The gallery is closed on Saturdays.

فنان دنماركى: موهبة الطفل المصرى أذهلتنى وفاقت الأوروبى

أكد الفنان الدنماركى الشهير كينيث بالفلت فى مقابلة أجراها معه اليوم السابع أن مواهب الطفل المصرى الفنية تفوق نظيره الدنماركى بشكل كبير، وتحدث عن تجربته أثناء مهرجان الفن والثقافة الذى ينظمه المعهد الدنماركى المصرى للحوار، وقال إنها كانت تجربة فريدة أن تتاح له الفرصة للعمل مع الأطفال المصريين فى معرض "أرت اللوا" بأرض اللواء.

وقال بالفلت، إنه عمل مع 15 طفلاً لم تتجاوز أعمارهم العشرة أعوام على مدار خمسة أيام تعرف خلالها على مهاراتهم وقدراتهم الفنية، وبدأ ورشة العمل بسؤال هؤلاء الأطفال عما يريدون أن يغيروه فى شارعهم أو مجتمعهم، فقالوا له إنهم يريدون أن يزيلوا القمامة وأن يستبدلوها بمنظر جمالى، وبالفعل هذا ما قام بعمله، حيث اعتمد مشروعه على صنع صناديق خشبية ملونة تعلوها الرسومات المختلفة لوضع القمامة بها.

وأشار بالفلت إلى أنه شعر بالذهول حيال قدرة الأطفال المصريين الفنية، فهم موهوبون بالفطرة، وأفضل من نظرائهم الدنماركيين، حيث يستطيعون الرسم أو الإنتاج على مدار ستة أو سبعة ساعات دون توقف، فى حين لا يستطع الطفل الدنماركى الرسم سوى لنصف ساعة أو 45 دقيقة، يقوم بعدها للعب أو لعمل شىء آخر.

وأشاد الفنان الدنماركى بالأطفال الذين وجدهم جادين للغاية ومسئولين على الرغم من صغر سنهم وسرد كيف قام أحمد، وهو طفل مشارك بورشة العمل، بجمع "الباليتات" من تلقاء نفسه لتنظيفها على الرغم من صعوبة ذلك.

وقال إن الأطفال يستخدمون الفرشاة بشكل لم يرَ له مثيلاً أيضاً، فالأطفال عادة ما يرسمون عندما يطلب منهم الرسم منزلاً أو زهوراً، ولكن الأطفال المشاركون استطاعوا مزج الألوان بشكل ملفت وخلقوا شيئاً مبتكراً فى نهاية الأمر.

وأوضح، أن ورشة العمل أفادت الأطفال بشكل كبير، حيث نمت لديهم حس فنى من خلاله تمكنوا من تحويل القبح إلى جمال وشعروا كأنهم جزء لا يتجزأ من المجتمع وأنهم قادرون على تغييره وتجميله، حتى أنهم عرضوا على أصحاب المحلات المجاورة أن يصنعوا لهم صناديق ملونة يضعون القمامة بداخلها لتجميل شارعهم، الأمر الذى رآه يستحق الاستحسان والتقدير.

وأجاب بالفلت عندما سأله اليوم السابع عن انطباعه عن مصر والمصريين، قائلاً "إن هذه الزيارة الأولى لى لمصر ورغم أنى كنت أتوقع بعض العداء من جانب المصريين بسبب الجدل الذى خلفته الرسوم المسيئة، إلا أنى وجدت أنهم شعب ودود وكريم للغاية، ويتسم بكرم الضيافة، فهم شعب طيب لديه مهارة فائقة على خلق الحب وتغيير المواقف السلبية فى أى مكان يذهبوا إليه، ولكنه مع الأسف شعب مقمع"، مشيراً إلى أن كل دولة لها نظام معين له سلبيات وإيجابيات.

وسرد كيف قابله المصريون بود وحب فى الفرح الشعبى بالمطرية، وقال إن الجبن الدنماركى كان أول ما خطر ببالهم عندما علموا أنه دنماركى.

وعن هدفه من المشاركة فى هذا البرنامج، أكد أنه لم يشارك للتكفير عن خطأ ارتكبه غيره، وإنما كان هدفه أن تستطيع المجتمعات تغيير الواقع السلبى بأنفسهم وبأيديهم حتى يعرفهم العالم بشكل أفضل، وهذه هى الطريقة المثلى لتعارف الشعوب على بعضها رغم اختلاف ثقافتها وديانتها، مضيفاً أنه كان يرغب أن يحث الأطفال من خلال ورشة العمل على تغيير سلبيات المجتمع إلى إيجابيات وألا ينتظروا من الجهات المسئولة أن تفعل أى شىء لهم.

Hamdy Reda is an artist and curator of the Artellewa art space located in an informal living quarter in Cairo. He was the guest curator of the group exhibition "Da Hena" in PROGR two years ago and is currently on a research trip in Switzerland with the support of Pro Helvetia. He will talk about the founding of his art space, his current and recent projects, and future perspectives such as residencies for Swiss artists at his institution. Besides, David Aebi (who works at the Kulturfabrik Burgdorf) will recount his personal experiences while working and exhibiting at Artellewa.

Amira Hanafi will return to Chicago this summer after a four-month drift in Cairo. More than 25 Cairenes walked with her, collaborating to create a map of the city based on feeling and experience.
On June 1, the artist will present documentation of her project in a lecture-performance.
Amira Hanafi has been walking as an artistic practice for the past several years, producing collages, drawings, maps and sometimes nothing at all. She is the author of Minced English, Trinities, and Forgery (forthcoming from Green Lantern Press, 2011) and has performed and exhibited her work in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Cairo.

ستعود الفنانة أميرة حنفي الى شيكاغو هذا الصيف، بعد جوله استغرقت اربعة أشهر في القاهره، اكثر من خمس وعشرون قاهري قاموا بالتجول معها، حيث تم التعاون بينهم لإبداع خريطة للمدينة قائمة على المشاعر والخبرات.
في الاول من يونيو سوف تقدم الفنانة توثيق لمشروعها في شكل محاضرة ادائية.
لبضعة سنوات كانت أميرة حنفي تتجول كممارسة للفن حيث انتجت اعمالا مختلفة لفن الكولاج والرسم والخرائط واحيانا اخرى لم تقم بأي شئ. وهي المؤلفة لكتاب الأنحليزية الرشيقة، و كتاب ثلاثيات وكتاب التزوير والذي ستصدره قريباً دار المشكاه الخضراء للنشر – جرين لانتر برس - عام المقبل ٢٠١١، و قامت أميرة بأداء وعرض أعمالها في شيكاغو ونيويورك وفيلادلفيا والقاهره

Love in a gift bag

The first striking thing about British artist Julie Oxenforth’s video installation at Artellewa art space is its simplicity.

In contrast to the long title, “A Moving Sea between the Shores of Our Own Souls” — the phrase comes from Khalil Gibran’s famous poem, “The Prophet” — the exhibit itself is short and, at first glance, basic.

Upon entering, a video of a bag dangling in an empty kitchen greets the viewer. Sounds of clashing waves fill the background. A breeze manipulates the bag, twisting it, swaying it, and rocking it back and forth.

Nothing actually changes as the viewer keeps watching — sometimes the bag’s swaying gets a bit more severe, other times it just dangles — but the video nevertheless invites meditation. Shoes must be removed before entering. The studio’s soft carpet and a curtain shading the video from the busy district solicit a state of quiet contemplation.

As one continues to ponder the meaning of it all, more details become apparent, complicating the video. This is not just any bag — it’s a gift bag with a heart stenciled on the side, a caption reading “Love,” and an image of a pair of wedding bands. But, based on the bag’s movements, it is empty; missing whatever gift that first required it. Likewise, the kitchen’s paltriness invites speculation.

The shelves and counters are bare, except for a dusty electric kettle, some neglected Turkish coffee pots, and many, many empty liquor bottles. The kitchen’s wall is dirty white, matching the color of the wall it’s projected upon, minimizing any division between the world of the video and the viewer’s.

The space itself — and Oxenforth chose Artellewa deliberately — serves the exhibit in other ways as well. The exhibit room opens onto a bustling Cairo street, separated only by a thin black curtain, and the complex (and loud) noises of the city mix and mingle with the simple, soft sounds piped into the room. Once this combination has settled with the viewer, the exhibit no longer seems so simple, nor so peaceful.

A text, meant to be read upon finishing the viewing, offers some insight into Oxenforth’s thought process.

“The image is a commercial depiction of a romantic love, a gift bag which may have contained a present but is now hanging empty in the kitchen of a deserted beach cafe,” the caption reads. “The wind blows through the space reactivating the bag into a spiraling dance of seemingly random movement, the image redolent of love and loss, time spent and used.”

The caption goes on to explain that Oxenforth intended to use the video to inspire “mimetic engulfment” (the term belongs to art writer Claire Bishop) for “fragmenting the ego … creating a vehicle for the viewer to lose the self.”

Hamdy Reda, owner of the Artellwa Art Space where the exhibit is displayed, said the video’s ambiguity is part of its charm.

“I don’t think about this,” he said. “I just watch it... I like the simplicity of her choice.”

He believes the video needs some time before its full depth is grasped.

“The piece is in need of some meditation,” he said. “You need some quiet for reading it.”

Reda said he sees the piece as part of the “El Estehlak” movement.

“El Estehlak,” which in Arabic means “consumption,” is an art movement seeking to critique the increasingly profound role corporate consumption plays in daily life. In Oxenforth’s piece, the abstract concept of love is scrawled on a shopping bag, which once contained a store-bought, very non-abstract, gift.

Reda said the exhibition has been greeted with a variety of critical response.

“One hundred and fifty people have visited the exhibit in the first two days,” he said. “Some artists like it. Some find it boring. Others say it seems nice, but a bit unfinished — maybe the artist should have worked a bit harder [those who criticize the piece feel].”

The exhibit has also generated a good bit of traffic from non-traditional art goers as well. Reda said their response has often been “somewhat confused” but he thinks that’s OK.

“The purpose of art is to ask questions,” he said. “Not to give answers.”

Oxenforth has been working as an artist in Egypt for the past three years. Currently, she lives in Dahab. Her background training is in painting and figurative sculpture, but she has since branched out into mixed media installation art.

فنانة متعددة التخصصات ،الموضوع العام لعملها ينصب علي تضئيل وضوح الحدود. هذا التضئيل يمكن أن يكون بين الفنان والعمل الفني، و الجمهور اوالبيئة ، وبين الرسم والنحت والهندسة المعمارية، بين التجريد والتشخيص، الرسمي وغير الرسمي، بين الوظيفي والاختلال الوظيفي.

لدي جولي خلفية في الرسم والنحت التشخيصي والتي تطورت الى مزيج من الاثنين في فن تركيب الوسائط المتعددة والتجهيز في الفراغ، وهو الوسيط الذي ارضي رغباتها في اللون والشكل والعلاقات ثلاثية البعاد، كذلك الفضاء الاجتماعي واستجابة المشاهد في العمل. بأي حال الفن الذي يحقق مساحة ما وعلى أي مستوى يحقق أهمية ما بالنسبة لها.
خلفيتها في النحت التشخيصي حاضرة في اعمالها وبصورة غياب جسم داخل العمل التجهيزي بمقاييس حجم الانسان، ويقوم المشاهد بدور هذا الجسم وهو ضروري لاستكمال العمل.

تعيش جولي في مصر، أرض التناقضات المثيرة، ولمدة الثلاث سنوات السابقة، والتي اخذتها بعمق في السعي للتوفيق بين الأضداد، وإيجاد التوازن. لقد لعبت رياضات التأمل والتشي قونغ دورا مهما في حياتها وتم ايستيعابها من خلال العلاقة بين هذه الممارسات وفن التجهيز الفراغي و الاثنين على حد سواء قاموا بتثبيت وزيادة الوعي بفقدان الذات والتلاشي لاحقاً.

Julie Oxenforth

A multi-disciplinary artist and the overall subject of her work is blurring boundaries. This could be between artist, artwork, audience and environment; painting, sculpture and architecture; abstract and figurative; formal and informal; functional and dysfunctional.

She have a background in painting and figurative sculpture which has developed into a blend of the two in mixed media installation art, a medium that satisfies her interest in color, form, 3D spatial relationships, social space and the viewer's response to the work. Art that offers space on whatever level it is perceived is paramount to me. Her background in figurative sculpture is present in the work as the absence of a figure in human-scale installation, the viewer taking the role of figure and being essential to complete the work.

She have been living in Egypt, a land of dramatic contrasts, for 3 years, which has taken she deeper into the quest of reconciling opposites and finding balance. Meditation and Chi Gong have played an important part in her life and She is absorbed by the connection between these practices and installation art as both heighten awareness of, and subsequently loss of, the Self.

لوحة سودانية توثق رحلة نهر النيل

تحتضن قاعة «اللواء» في القاهرة معرضاً فنياً للتشكيلي السوداني معتز الإمام عنوانه «النهر». ويشغل العمل مساحة 16 متراً مربعاً وهو عبارة عن إبداع توثيقي يمثل رحلة نهر النيل من المنبع في بحيرة فيكتوريا في أوغندا حتى المصب عند البحر الأبيض، بإنسانه وحيوانه ومناخه. ويمثل مساحة أعدها الفنان للاحتفال بالبيئة ضمن مشروعه الكبير «مقاومه تغير المناخ وحشد الدعم الشعبي» من خلال الفن لهذه القضية الضخمة.

«النهر سر الوجود» عبارة يضعها الإمام نصب عينيه، وهو يسعى من خلال معرضه إلى تسجيل حضور لوني فني لعلاقة أزلية، هي علاقة نهر النيل وإنسانه وحيوانه ومناخه وثقافته ببعضهم بعضاً من خلال العناصر والأمكنة. «النهر» سؤال قديم وملح في كل سفرياته وتنقلاته بين بلدان حوض النيل.

يقول: «مازلت واقعاً بين تلك الاستفزازات البصرية والفكرية العظيمة للشكل المهيب والمضمون العميق للنهر وما حوله من جدليه للفكر والنظر، وأنت تحلق بالطائرة أو تلك الملامح والسحنات والثقافات المتعددة والمتقاربة في وادي النهر العظيم تلحظ ذلك بوضوح من جميع الزوايا، وأن كل تلك المؤثرات الجمالية ما هي إلا أسئلة تحتاج الى البحث وإدارة الحوار مع مفرداتها، وهي حقل مفتوح للدراسة الجمالية أيضاً».

ويخاطب الفنان المُتلقي من خلال كتابة رافقت العمل: «قد تبدو لك خريطة، وقد تبدو لك لوحه تجريدية، وقد تبدو لك دراسة لونية، وقد تبدو لك لا شيء لكنها حوار مستمر».

معتز الإمام فنان تشكيلي سوداني من مواليد 1979 درس وتخرج في كلية الفنون الجميلة في جامعة السودان في الخرطوم. عاش وتنقل بين معظم دول حوض النيل، ويعيش حالياً ويعمل كفنان متفرغ بين مصر والسودان. كما عمل كفنان تشكيلي متفرغ منذ تخرجه والى الآن، وكأستاذ رسم وتلوين ومعالج نفسي من طريق الرسم والتلوين للأطفال ضحايا الحروب في مركز غريس (grace) لرعاية الأطفال في العاصمة السودانية.

سر الوجود ...اسعى من خلاله الى تسجيل حضور لونى فنى لعلاقه ازليه، هى علاقه النهر العظيم وانسانه وحيوانه ومناخه وثقافته ببعضهم البعض من خلال العناصر والامكنه ...النهر سؤال قديم وملح فى كل سفرياتى وتنقلاتى بين بلدان حوض النيل، وكنت ومازلت واقعاً بين تلك الاستفزازات البصرية والفكرية العظيمة للشكل المهيب والمضمون العميق للنهر وما حوله من جدليه للفكر والنظر...وانت تحلق بالطائرة او تلك الملامح والسحنات والثقافات المتعددة والمتقاربة فى وادى النهر العظيم ... تلحظ ذلك بوضوح من جميع الزوايا .
إذن كل تلك المؤثرات الجمالية اسئله تحتاج للبحث وإدارة الحوار مع مفرداتها، وهى حقل مفتوح للدراسه الجمالية ايضا . فكان هذا الحوار الاولى مع النهر ( الاب )- نهر النيل من المنبع فى بحيره فكتوريا فى أوغندا، وهى منبع النيل الابيض احد اهم روافد نهر النيل .أو بحيرة تانا فى أثيوبيا وهى منبع النيل الازرق - مرورا بالسودان دولة تشكل وتكون النهر العظيم وصولاً الى المصب فى مصر عند البحر الابيض عن طريق أنهار دمياط ورشيد فى نهاية رسالة النهر الخالد .
كل هذه الجغرافيا استطاع النهر ان يشكلها حضوراً جمالياً أنيقا .
قد تبدو لك خريطه - وقد تبدو لك لوحه تجريدية – وقد تبدو لك دراسه لونية – وقد تبدو لك لاشيئ
ولاكنها حوار مستمر فى عدة موضوعات ضمن مشروعى الاكبر الاحتفال بالبيئة وحشد الدعم الاجتماعى لها ومقاومة تغير المناخ والاخطار الناجمة عنه.

عمل كفنان تشكيلى متفرغ منذ تخرجة والى الان، عمل كاستاذ رسم وتلوين ومعالج نفسى عن طريق الرسم والتلوين للاطفال ضحايا الحروب بمركز قريس grace لرعايه الاطفال بالخرطوم واقام العديد من المعارض الخاصة والجماعية وورش العمل داخل وخارج السودان .
مشارك فى الحركه التشكيليه العالميه من خلال المعارض وورش العمل والاقامات الفنيه ومن خلال تحرير ملف الفن الافريقى لمجله not apartheid art التى تصدر عن متحف كام كاسوريا للفن المعاصر –بنابولى –ايطاليا cam Casoria contemporary art museum
طبيعه عملة كفنان تملئ عليه الاصغاء للحوار الجمالى مع الكائنات والامكنه والضوء وعناصر الطبيعه والخيال .اعتمد على اللغة الجمالية البصرية كأساس للتعبير .
عاش وتنقل بين معظم دول حوض النيل، يعيش ويعمل كفنان متفرغ بين مصر والسودان .

Mutaz Emam is a Sudanese artist born on 1979. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. He is a full time artist and volunteer teacher of drawing and coloring to children, which is a part of his experience in using art and painting in psychotherapy of victims of war at the Grace Child Care Center in Khartoum. He exhibited his work in many solo and collective exhibitions and workshops within and outside Sudan.
Mr. Emam is the editor of the African art file for Not Apartheid art magazine, published by the Cam Casoria museum of Contemporary Art in Naples – Italy.
The art work of Mr. Emam is a form of dialogue with the aesthetic objects, space, light, and the elements of nature and imagination. He uses the visual language as a basis for his aesthetic expression.
Mr Emam lived and traveled to most of the Nile Basin countries and lives and works between Egypt and Sudan.

The River

The secret of existence ... I try in this exhibition to document an eternal colorful artistic relation between the great river and its people, animals, environment, and culture. This relation is narrated through places and elements. The river for me is an old question, present in all my travels between and inside the Nile Basin countries. The great majestic river represents visual and intellectual provocations for my mind and my eyes. While travelling by plane I can’t ignore my thoughts of these multicultural features and faces that are converged in the Valley of the great river, and noticed clearly from all angles.
All these aesthetic influences are questions that need to be searched in order to create a dialogue with its vocabulary which is an open field to aesthetic studies t as well. This was the first dialogue with the river (Father) - River Nile from its source in Lake Victoria in Uganda, which is the source of White Nile- one of the major tributaries of the River Nile. Or lake Tana in Ethiopia, which is the source of the Blue Nile - through Sudan, a nation that forms the great river, and down to the estuary in Egypt at the White Sea through the Damietta and Rosetta rivers in the end of the mission of the eternal river.
All this geography was formed by the river’s elegant aesthetic presence.
It may seem to you a map, abstract painting, a study of colors – or it may seem to you nothing.
However, I think it is a continuous dialogue on various topics within my larger project which is the celebration of the environment and to mobilize social support for it, and the resistance to climate change and the dangers resulting from it.

في هذة المنطقة تستقر تقريبا كل انواع المحلات-واحد بجانب الاخر-يكاد يكون في كل مبنى نشاط تجاري.
آرت اللوا للفنون المعاصرة تشبه هذه المحلات: مكان صغير المساحة يتم فتحه يومياً لعرض أعمال فنية.

لقد قمت بعمل صور فوتوغرافية لبعض الملاك والعاملين في هذة المحلات، يتم عرض الصور في خط واحد داخل المساحة.
يقدم المعرض في "محل" آرت اللوا نظرة قريبة عن الحياة اليومية لحياة الملاك، و العاملين و محيطهم ـ و قد تحولت لتصبح صور على الحائط. وبهذه الطريقة تصبح صورهم في "محل-متاخم"طريق للتواصل بينهم و بين المساحة الفنية.

أحمد كامل
ولد في القاهرة عام 1981، حصل على بكالوريوس الفنون الجميلة، قسم التصوير، القاهرة.
أظهر اهتماما باستخدام الفن بوصفه شكلا لطرح الموضوعات ذات الطابع الاجتماعية ، يعمل بالتصوير الفوتوغرافي والفيديو للتعبير عن اهتمامه بالمساحات الخاصة بالأساس، وكذلك بالمناطق الحضرية. شارك كامل في عدد من الإقامات الفنية وورش العمل. كما انه شارك في عدة معارض في مصر وألمانيا والدنمارك وتركيا والأردن.

Shop-Abutting
Photo series, Cairo-Egypt (2009)

Ard El Lewa consists of long narrow streets with high dwelling houses on both sides.
In this area you can find all kinds of shops – one after another, and almost every building includes various commercial activities.
artellewa contemporary art showroom imitates these shops; A small space that opens everyday to show artworks.
I have photographed some owners/workers of some shops, to exhibit these pictures in one line inside the showroom.
The exhibition in artellewa "shop" offers an insight look of the everyday life of the owners, workers, sellers and their surroundings – transformed in becoming an image on the wall.
In this way their own images at the “Shop-Abutting” can work as a bridge between the art space and themselves.

Ahmed Kamel

born 1981 in Cairo, received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo.
Showing interest in using art as a form to address social issues, he works with photography and video to express his interest in mainly domestic life as well as urban. Kamel participated in a number of artist in residencies and workshops. He also has taken part in various exhibitions in Egypt, Germany, Denmark, Turkey and Jordan.

2010 ARTELLEWA Artist in Residence Program for artists (Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey)

In 2010 The ARTELLEWA Art Space (Cairo) is offering a 2 to 3 Months Residency for 4 Visual Artists from the Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey. The program is sponsored by Arts Collaboratory ( Arts Collaboratory is a Hivos and Doen Foundation programme for visual artists's initiatives in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and for exchange with visual arts organizations in the Netherlands in cooperation with Mondriaan Foundation) .
Artellewa Art Space offers a unique Artist-in-Residence experience, since the residency takes place at one of the most populated areas in Cairo called “ Ard El-Lewa” where artellewa is located.
The artists will reside in a “work and live” neighborhood, where workers and artisans live and work. The neighborhood also offers a friendly atmosphere to the artists.
The artists create their artworks based on their interaction with the people in the neighborhood. In previous residences the artists worked closely with people from the neighborhood, which in fact is one of the reasons behind establishing artellewa, and this reason is to stimulate the participation of the locals in artistic processes in order to build appreciation for the value of arts in daily life.
The residency will include a private work studio, living space, and a monthly stipend which covers meals and local transportation. Artellewa will also cover the costs of artists working materials, and will organize an exhibition for each artist at the Artellewa Gallery by the end of the residency. No other financial support is granted, and round-trip airfare will be covered by the artist.
The call for applications is open to contemporary artists from the Arab region, North Africa, and Turkey: visual artists, photographers, sculptors, performers, writers, video/filmmakers, composers. The selection of the artists will be based on the merits of their applications and portfolios. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee from artellewa.
Deadline: Applications must be emailed by Jan 31, 2010 for a residency in 2010.
Notification:  Applicants will be notified of selection by email in Feb. 2010.

Which leads eventually to a type of psychological equilibrium of the creator , then he passes the opportunity to move again and again ....

الفن حالة يعيشها الفنان في لحظة فريدة، ينتقل من خلالها الي عالم يشبه الفصام حيث ينفصل عن العالم الواقعي، ويطير فيه ويتمازج معه.
تؤرقه الأفكار في بعض الأحيان بحيث تصبح مسيطرة علي ذهنة، وهنا يدخل في حيز الإنتقال بهذه الأفكار أو الاشارات من الذهني إلي المرئي والواقع مرة أخري في حالة اشبه بالولادة لنري من خلالها تلك الأفكار في شكل العمل الفني المنتج.
مما تؤدي بالنهاية الي نوع من انواع الإتزان النفسي للمبدع حتي تواتيه فرصة انتقال اخري....

The artist Mariló and Anne, from LaFundició, are artists in residence in artellewa until the end of December. They are doing an art project for the children of Art Alloa, to interchange experiences and to connect them with the children of the same age in Barcelona.

The Residence and exchange project is organized by artellewa and the Centre d'art i natura with the support of the Spanish Embassy in Cairo and the Agencia Espanola de cooperacion इन्तेर्नकिओनल.

La agencia de viajes 'on line' Destinia está colaborando "activamente" con la ONG egipcia Artellewa, cuya última actuación fue la decoración de un hospital de niños enfermos de cáncer a través de la incorporación de pinturas y paneles ornamentales.

"Tras varias semanas de trabajo, se ha logrado convertir el espacio en el que conviven los enfermos en un lugar más cálido y humano, gracias a la incorporación de pinturas y murales con coloridos motivos florales y vegetales, imágenes de aves y techos que simulan un cielo con nubes", recalcó la agencia de viajes 'online' en un comunicado.

Artellewa es un espacio de arte contemporáneo independiente, sin ánimo de lucro, fundado en 2007 por Hamdy Reda, con el apoyo de otros artistas, sociólogos y periodistas. Localizada en uno de los barrios más marginales de El Cairo, esta galería se involucra con causas de índole social y cultural y está colaborando en numerosos proyectos destinados a apoyar a los más desprotegidos.

El artista está muy concienciado de los problemas que padecen los niños más desfavorecidos de El Cairo y en su galería ofrece talleres específicos para los más pequeños y se involucra constantemente en el desarrollo de iniciativas que contribuyan a su bienestar.

آرت اللوا توافق علي جميع الأعمال الفنية بمختلف اتجهاتها واساليبها وطرق صياغتها،

تقيم "آرت اللواء" أولى ندواتها الأدبية, يوم الجمعة الموافق 3 أبريل, تحت عنوان "الندوة الأولى.. الإصدار الأول", يتحدث فيها كلاٌ من الروائية إيمان عبد العظيم محمد عن روايتها "الممر الضيق", والقاصة رضوى أسامة عن مجموعتها "جردل وصابون سايل", والشاعر أحمد شلبي عن ديوانه "اللي اتكسر يتطوح", ليقدموا بذلك شهادة حول تجربة الإصدار الأول, وستدير الندوة ياسمين مجدي.

Men and Chairs
The Male Street

Chairs in the street, scattered or gathered in coffee shops. The male street. A place of playing, talking, or moments of self-absorption over a cup of tea or a shisha. I’ve asked some of these men to hold the red helmets with which I am drawing a symbolic line around the Mediterranean basin. A line of red dots which is intended to be a way of union between people and different cultures.
Looking through the camera’s lens, or being absent from what happens around us, they became, for a moment, part of this chain as other people have already done so in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Italy, or Spain.
I do not know to which extent the unexpected presence of these helmets that you can see in all the photographs has meant something more than a game, or a practical joke to them. I am certain, however, that my passage through Ard El-Lewa would have been more distant if I had not gotten closer to its inhabitants with this request.
It is not by any means about furtive photos taken without anyone’s knowledge and intended to capture the spontaneity of everyday life.
Everyone has seen the helmets, strange objects, on the ground or in their own hands. I’ve shooted them with a tripod and patience.
I can say that a brief moment of privacy has been established between us.
I, as well, have sat in their chairs with a cup of tea in my hand.

Joma

Joma alternates his artistic work in Barcelona with the project "Endless Voyage" which has led him to visit the countries of the Mediterranean basin, drawing with his worker helmets a symbolic line of red dots. With this, he seeks to create an ideal way of communication between places and cultures.

رجال و كراسي
شارع الذكور

كراسي في الشارع متفرقه أو مجتمعة داخل المقاهي. شارع الرجال .مكان لللعب و المحادثه أو شرود الذهن أمام كوب الشاي أو الشيشه. لقد طلبت من بعض هؤلاء الرجال حمل الخوذات الحمراء لأرسم بها خط رمزي حول البحر الأبيض المتوسط .
خط ذات نقاط حمراء ليمثل طريق الإلتقاء بين الشعوب و الثقافات المختلفه .
محدقاً للحظة في الكاميرا الفوتوغرافيه، أو بالأحرى شاردين بأذهانهم، وبنظرات تائهه , أصبحوا في لحظة جزءاً من هذه السلسه.
كما سبق لأشخاص أخرين أن فعلوا ذلك في مصر و سوريا و لبنان و تركيا و اليونان و إيطاليا أو إسبانيا.
لا أعرف لأي مدى تعني وجود هذه الخوذات - التي يمكن أن تراها في جميع الصور الفوتوغرافيه- بالنسبه لهم أكثر من كونها لعبه أو مزحه عابره.
و مع ذلك فإني متأكد بأن وجودي في أرض اللواء كان من الممكن جداً أن يكون أكثر بعداً، إذا لم أكن قد أقتربت من سكانها بهذا الطلب.

بأي حال إنها ليست صور عابره تم التقاطها بسرعة دون أن تلفت إنتباه أحد قاصدة انتاج صور للحياة اليومية بتلقائيه. فالجميع قد شاهد الخوذات، تلك الأشياء الغريبه، على الأرض أو بين أياديهم. لقد أنجزت عملي بهدوء وبكاميرا مثبته علي حامل.
استطيع ان اقول بأني قد أقمت لحظة قصيره من الخصوصية بيننا.
و كذلك قد جلست على كراسيهم و الشاي بيدي.

جوما

يقوم جوما بعمله الفني في برشلونا علي مشروع يدعى "رحلة لا تنتهي - Endless Voyage" الذي حمله لزيارة بلاد حوض البحر المتوسط، ليرسم بخوذات العامل خط رمزي ذات نقاط حمراء، و بها بدى كأنه يرسم طريق مثالي للإتصال بين الشعوب و الثقافات.

خلف عينيك

الجميع يرتدون الأقنعة. كل فرد لديه شفرته اللغوية الفريدة, ومعرفته.القناع يحمينا من خلال إخفاء شخصنا الضعيف القابل للاستغلال.
لا أستطيع جعل أي شخص أن يفهم بالضبط نواياي أو معنى ماأريد إيصاله. أنا فقط أوفر غرفة بصرية لك لترى, وما يجري من وراء عينيك متروك لك لتقوله. إنها حالة من التواصل.

النصوص المستخدمة في هذا العمل التركيبي قد تم اختيارها من مختلف الكتب المقدسة ومن ديانات من جميع أنحاء العالم.

بدأت فكرة هذا المشروع في عام 2006 في القاهرة والآن تعرض هنا في معرضها الخامس و الأخير.

بيكا بارسون يعيش ويعمل في النرويج. يعمل من خلال أساليب وتقنيات متعددة. حاز على جائزة في ألمانيا عن فيلم قصيرله, و أعماله عرضت بمعارض فردية رئيسية في الدول الاسكندنافية. و منذ عام 2005 أصبح بيكا بارسون جزءً من المشهد الفني للقاهرة.

BEHIND YOUR EYES

Everybody is wearing a disguise. Each individual has a unique code of language and knowledge. The disguise is a protection to hide our vulnerable persona against being exploited. I can not make anybody understand exactly my intentions or meaning. I am just providing a visual room for you to feel. What’s going on behind your eyes is for you to say. It is a matter of communication.

The texts I have used in this installation have been selected from various holy books from religions all over the world.

This project started as an idea in 2006 in Cairo and now presented here as the 5th and final installation.

Pekka Persson lives and works in Norway. He works in many different styles and techniques. He received International Award for a short film in Germany and has work has been exhibited at major solo exhibitions in Scandinavia and since 2005 he became a part of the Cairo art scene.

one³ venue_© is an artist run, non-commercial network of galleries for showing and exchanging contemporary art, established by an international collaboration between five art venues in five countries: Denmark, Japan, France, Scotland and Egypt.

one³ venue_© network strives to create a forum for dialogue, discussion and exchange among artists throughout the world, and to provide an audience the opportunity to view contemporary work from different countries – without compromising the artistic development

Each venue sites an identical glass cube of 80x80x80cm, placed on a 100cm high plinth

Artists are called upon to submit project proposals for one³ venue_© 's 2008/09 cycle. Three artists from Egypt will be selected to show at all 5 cubic venues.

Ard El-Lewa’s kids are treated to free art workshops

Through a winding alleyway in Giza, in the rundown neighborhood of Ard El-Lewa, nestled between old buildings is the Artellewa gallery, one of the newest and most talked about art centers in Egypt.

On the small rooftop, there's a sensation of pure joy and a carefree attitude. Children here are quieter, focusing on perfecting their drawings and paintings. For more than four months, Artellewa's workshop has given underprivileged children in the area an outlet to express themselves and find their hidden talents.

The workshop is one of many ideas Hamdy Reda, owner and founder of Artellewa, had in mind when opening the gallery earlier this year. "One of the primary goals of Artellewa was to provide artistic services for kids and teenagers in the area," Reda told The Daily Star Egypt.

The children's work is currently on display in an exhibition called "Awel Quatfah."

The activities normally available to the children are limited. For them, this workshop is a retreat and a chance to practice a hobby they can afford.

Although none of the kids could articulate their passion for art, their eyes gleam the moment they complete a painting. They all have different dreams for their futures, but the majority hope to become artists or at least continue being involved with art.

I found Reda on the rooftop with a group of six- to nine-year-old kids who sat in the shade painting, coloring and just having fun.

The idea behind the workshop was simple: create a place for kids to paint and provide them with some material free of charge. There are no rules, no restrictions and no requirements; even those who do not know how to paint can still participate. The adults' role is limited to supervision.

Artist Hanna El Daygham brought her old coloring materials and plenty of blank paper and gave them to the kids visiting her exhibition. The idea came to her when she saw how much they enjoyed drawing.

"We got El Daygham some chairs and tables and the project kicked off right away," Reda said.

Reda, a resident of Ard El-Lewa, made no announcements or invitations. "Many of the [neighborhood] kids are familiar with the place, so as soon we started the project, they just came."

He considered postponing his project until school let out in the summer, but too many children came on a regular basis. So workshop was held on Fridays during the school year.

At first, the kids were given the artists' leftover materials, but soon enough, Hamdy bought them brand-new water colors. Later on, Hamdy invited a number of his friends to participate in the workshop.

Ibrahim Saad, who went to college with Hamdy, said the reason he joined the project was because he believes that "childhood, and the work created in it, is the period that differentiates a good painter from a great one."

Saad added that he personally benefited from his experience with the children. "It's always fascinating, for me as an artist, to watch them create something out of nothing without any preparation," Saad said.

Another contributing painter is Magdy Moustafa, a resident artist at the gallery who is currently working on a sound-art project. Moustafa studied developmental psychology for five years and has previously worked as an art teacher.

Moustafa's commitment to the workshop is rooted in his belief that the kids of Ard El-Lewa need art more than children in more privileged areas. "These kids are hardly exposed to this type of entertainment and culture. They desperately need to express themselves without boundaries, play and [interact] with each other," Moustafa said.

Most of the displayed paintings of the workshop are simple, yet spontaneous. The content of the girls' artwork focuses mainly on nature and landscapes, depicting oceans or vast green meadows. Boys, on the other hand, mainly feature TV characters or superheroes.

One of the most promising participants of the children's workshop is 10-year-old Hebatallah Hussein, who has been a regular visitor of Artellewa since it first opened. Her paintings are vibrant and expressive.

According to Saad, her paintings are exceptional and she has great potential in becoming an accomplished artist.

Both Moustafa and Reda believe that children do not learn art appreciation in schools, and this is one of the main aims of the workshop.

Hamdy says it's hard to pinpoint the impact of the workshop on the children, and he's not too concerned with doing so. "My foremost ambition is to set up a place for them to reflect their impression of the world through colors and pictures," Hamdy said.

He's also concerned about finding more room to accommodate the increasing number of children.

"All I really wish is for those children to have an artistic sense," Moustafa said, "to learn how to enjoy life through beauty."

This month's artist Malak Helmy turned the glass into beautiful cakes, designed to tempt the viewer from afar

Artellewa brings a new perspective full of colors, funny shapes to Ard El Lewa district

Flying pink chicken or naked baked women? In either case, Malak Helmy didn't fail to grab our attention in the witty and eccentric way she garnished this beautiful and eccentric glass cube gallery.

The JICPB Cube Gallery is an international collaboration between five independent art spaces in five different countries.

The Cube Gallery features France, Japan, Scotland, Denmark and Egypt who joined the group in May 2007 thanks to Mohamed Abdallah, an artist who met with the Cube's founder, Klavs Weiss, while taking an art program in Spain with him. The Cube wants to provide an opportunity to show new and exciting developments in the contemporary practice of artists from different countries, and to raise awareness of modern art in culturally deprived locations throughout the world.

Three different artists from each country are presenting their works. Last month, it was Houreya El Sayed. In June it was Malak Helmy and next month's Egyptian artist is now being selected. The artists' works will tour in an exchange program with the other collaborating countries for 15 months, three months per country. This offers great exposure for young Egyptian artists, at the same time, enabling them to participate in the global network and a forum for artistic dialogue.

The artists were instructed to create an experimental piece using a glass cube measuring 80cm, placed on a 100cm platform. Last week Malak Helmy transformed this glass cube into a vitrine at a confectionery. The hovering pink, brown and black "Gateaux Soiree" embodies the perverse perfection of display, the etiquette of a world of delights and flavors coolly composed into bite-sized, beautiful cakes and chocolates to tempt the viewer from a distance.

The confectioner's display is unblemished, pure beauty formed in rigid order — they require small mouths, small nibbles and a napkin to be eaten properly. With obsessive etiquette they preserve themselves as samplers of delights and mask their potential to become what they would themselves consider to be grotesque — from the way they are eaten, to the consequences that follow — that may destroy their feigned composure.

Helmy noticed that "the kids found it quite alluring but funny. Women giggled a lot and found the gateaux aspect a little embarrassing I think."

Helmy is a multi-talented AUC art graduate. Although her work is mainly composed of paintings, her main interest is in seeing people interact with her art and for her art to live among them. That is why The Cube Gallery project perfectly fits with her vision.

Helmy is known for her huge black and white tableaux at Zamalek’s Nile-front Sequoia restaurant, where she would translate her spontaneous thoughts into attractive sketched layers of calligraphy “Kalam Milaza." She previously showcased her work in Townhouse and Falaky galleries and in Bangladesh where she displayed project called "Film Hindi," a series of fictional stories of herself and her close friends shown through Egyptian and Bangladeshi film posters.

What astonished me is how Helmy subtly succeeded in integrating two different worlds in perfect harmony. The theme she chose paradoxically emphasizes the contrast between the sophisticated world of perfection and meticulousness she depicts in her work with the simple world of Ard El Lewa residents, though that wasn't really her intention.

On the one hand there's a frank sensuality emanating from the artist's work where the ambiguous gateaux are candidly displayed and are waiting to be devoured. On the other hand a glass case serves as a reminder that one can look but not touch — an Egyptian cliché, hence the title of the instillation "Gateaux Soiree."

call for proposals: “100mm”

artellewa space for contemporary arts is launching a call for proposals for egyptian artists to take part in an collective exhibition..

september 2007 artellewa will open the new exhibition season 2007-2008 with an exhibition called “100 mm”. this exhibition will show 100 art pieces one hang next to the other, that are limited to the size of 100mmx100mm (x100mm).
the idea is to show how artists from different disciplines work with these conditions of a reduced space and what miniature art could mean today in a contemporary sense of art.

artellewa is calling for interested artists to send us their art piece/ a proposal/ picture/ documentation of their piece to artellewa until the 10th of august. (deadline)

every visual artform – photography, video (100seconds), painting, drawing, sculpture, objects arts – will get the chance to be exposed.

لوحات زيتية لهناء الديغم ،فنانة تشكيلية حرة مصرية مواليد 1977 - القاهرة. درست الرسم والتصوير فى كلية الفنون الجميلة بالقاهرة

1994-1999. ثلاث رحلات كان لهم أثر كبير في أعمالها، رحلة الأقصر من خلال منحة مرسم الأقصر 2002 ، مشروع تخرجها عن الحالات النفسية والإنسانية "مصحة نفسية 1999"، وكذلك بيت المغتربات الذي أقامت به 1997-1999.

معرض "غياب" هو معرضها الفردي الأول، شاركت هناء من قبل في عدة معارض جماعية

في أعمالها تهتم هناء بالحالة الإنسانية عموما. وتركز علي دراسة تلك الحالة الإنسانية بعمق من خلال محيط الأسرة ومن خلال الرصد الذاتي لمختلف الحالات التي تمر بها الفنانة نفسها. أعربت هناء عن مشاعر وانطباعات قوية في لوحاتها الملونة ببالته لونية غاية في الحساسية والقوة في ذات الوقت، والتي تظهر توافق غير عادي في التعبير بعمق عن تلك المواقف والحالات ، إحساسا خاصا لفهم ألذات و لفهم الآخرين.

ارت اللوا- مساحة للفنون المعاصرة، مشروع مستقل غير هادف للربح، بدأ المشروع مجموعة من الأشخاص مختلفي الاهتمامات، ربط بينهم الاعتقاد في وجود حاجة إلى استقدام الفنون إلي مناطق نائية بعيدة عن إي أنشطة أو مؤسسات ثقافية. عملنا يسهم في التنمية الثقافية والتعليمية للسكان المحليين وكذلك لفهم أفضل للفنون المرئية المعاصرة. هنالك العديد من الأسباب التي تدفعنا لفكرة أقامة معارض وأنشطة ثقافية بمنطقة أرض اللواء. هدفنا الأساسي نشر ثقافة الصورة بين أهلي تلك المناطق العشوائية، بالإضافة إلي اكتشاف ومساعدة الموهوبين فنياً بينهم، وذلك في إطار التنمية الثقافية للمحليين، والارتقاء بمستوي فهم الفنون المرئية بينهم. إقامة المعارض والأنشطة الثقافية هنا بمثابة خلق مساحة للارتقاء بالذوق العام بالإضافة إلي التقليل من وطأة متاعب الحياة والتكدس وحيث يعتبر الفن بصفة عامة درباً من الترف. وعلاوة على ذلك نريد لفت الأنظار لمثل هذه المناطق الفقيرة ، والبدء ببناء هياكل غير رسمية بديلة لزيادة الوعي الثقافي لأبناء هذه المنطقة عموما والشباب خصوصا. تقع منطقة أرض اللواء إلي الشمال الغربي لمحافظة الجيزة غرب خط القطار، وهي احدي المناطق العشوائية الفقيرة بمحافظة القاهرة الكبرى العاصمة، و تقع تلك المنطقة الصغيرة نسبياً بين أكبر منطقتين عشوائيتين بمصر وهما بولاق الدكرور وإمبابة، ولكن تظل هذه الفئة محرومة من وسائل الترفيه، حيث لا توجد ثمة حديقة أو مسرح أو قاعة عرض واحدة. و تتكون تلك المساحة من صالتين صغيرتين للعرض بمساحة 2.5 *2.5 متر أحداهما خارجية تطل علي الشارع مباشرتاً، حيث يستطيع المارة مشاهدة ما بها، ونقدم بتلك القاعة أعمال لمختلف الفنانين والتي تم إبداعها علي أساس مناسب لمفهوم تلك المساحة الصغيرة المفتوحة. والأخرى داخلية، علاوة على ذلك يوجد مساحة أعلى المبني (حوالي 80 متر مربع) نخطط لعقد مناقشات حول المعارض المقامة فعلياً مقابلة الفنان" ، فضلا عن المحاضرات و ورش عمل فنية وعروض أفلام.

The project

The art space “artellewa” is an independent, non-profit-project, initiated from several characters from different diciplines (fine arts, sociology, photgraphy), who came together in the conviction of a need of bringing art to areas far off from any organised cultural acitivities. Our work shall contribute to the cultural development and education of locals as well as for a better understanding for contemporary visual arts.The idea of doing art exhibitions in ard el lewa
We have several purposes. The idea behind this art space especially and the initiative in general is to bring cultural education in form of art exhibitions, performances and video shows to poorer educated people to offer them an extraordinary place of rest and relieve in a residential domain, where art is in general considered as a good of luxury.Furthermore with this art space we want to gain publicity for poorer areas like these, and to start building up informal structures of alternative education for the people of this area in general and for the younger egyptian population especially.

The area “ard el lewa”

Ard el lewa, a residential area in the north-west of giza, situated west of the railway, is one of the outskirt-slums of greater Cairo. Situated in between the two great informal areas boulag al dakrour and embaba, there is until now, although loads of people live here, no place or space for art or other cultural activities like movies, concerts or theatres existing .

The art space “artellewa”

The place itself is two small exhibition rooms, one small shop-like showcase of 2.5 x 2.5 meters, which is open to the street, so by-passers have a view inside the “shop”. In this room we present the work of different artists, which created their pieces especially for this concept of a small open space. Furthermore there is a roof top space (~80 sqm), where we plan to held discussions on the actual exhibitions (“meet the artist”), as well as art-lectures, workshops and films-screenings.
